Home Maintenence Checklist - Part 2
We started this home maintenance series (see part 1) because when we say “love where you live”, we also mean showing your home the love and care it needs to stay in the best shape over the lifetime of your ownership.
We realize that some homeowners need a little help to know what and how to care for their home and some just need a reminder (we get busy too). Here are the top recommendations for home maintenance this summer from Taylor Vreeken at Professional Inspection Services.
(Quick reminder - we share a short list of home maintenance items that are approachable in our newsletter each month. Sign up using the form below to be added to the list.)
Check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors (monthly)
A smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector should be on each floor level, ideally in the bedroom hallway(s). Carbon monoxide detectors are not required in bedrooms, but smoke detectors are recommended. In a perfect world, you should check detectors monthly and replace all detector units after 10 years.
Time to clean your laundry clothes dryer vent (annually)
Years ago, trying to have your laundry dryer vent cleaned by a professional, was a difficult task. Now, several companies provide the necessary annual service. If your dryer is taking too long to dry a load of clothes, there’s a good chance your vent is dirty, leaving the dryer vent dirty and clogged can damage a dryer or even worse, create a fire.
HVAC - whether you have heating, cooling, or both, maintenance is the key to longevity (every 3-5 years)
Almost every heating and cooling company offers maintenance programs that usually consist of checking the unit’s functionality, furnace flame colors & patterns, air filters, rodent intrusion, cleanliness, etc. Like a car, catching minor problems ahead of time through regular maintenance can save a ton of money.
And just a reminder, you can also have your home inspected by an expert annually to get a list of items that might need to be addressed to keep your home in good condition. We’d be happy to put you in touch with trusted professionals in the local San Luis Obispo County area that can help. Reach out!
